Next Century 1 och 2 var en serie konstnärsbesök till Västra Götalandsregionen från Kina. Under projektperioden april 2019–september 2024 har femton kinesiska grafiker, under olika boendeformer och under olika tidslängder, besökt västsvenska grafiker, arbetat tillsammans med oss i våra verkstäder, ställt ut offentligt och lett workshops för allmänheten. Sju grafiska verkstäder och sju utställningslokaler har deltagit i projektet, med hundratals medlemmar engagerade i dessa besök i olika roller.



“新纪元”1 和 2 是一系列来自中国的艺术家访问西约塔兰省的项目。项目期间为 2019 年 4 月至 2024 年 9 月,十五位中国版画艺术家以不同的住宿方式和不同的时间长度,拜访了西瑞典的版画艺术家,并与我们一起在我们的工作室工作,进行公开展览,并主持面向公众的工作坊。七个版画工作室和七个展览空间参与了该项目,数百名成员以不同的身份参与了这些访问项目。



Next Century 1 and 2 were a series of artist visits to the Västra Götaland region from China. During the project period Apr. 2019- Sept. 2024, fifteen Chinese graphic artists, under different forms of accommodation and for different lengths of time, have visited West Swedish graphic artists, worked together with us in our workshops, exhibited publicly and led workshops for the public. Seven graphic workshops and seven exhibition spaces have participated in the project, with hundreds of members engaged in these visits in different capacities.

NC 2 movie:



Efter att pandemin stoppade Next Century 1 återupptogs Next Century 2 år 2024 som ytterligare en serie konstnärsbesök från Kina till Västra Götalandsregionen. Under projektperioden juni–september 2024 besökte 6 kinesiska grafiker, under olika former av boende och under olika lång tid, västsvenska grafiker, arbetade tillsammans med oss i våra verkstäder och ställde ut offentligt. Världskulturmuseet, 3 grafiska verkstäder och 2 utställningslokaler har deltagit i projektet, med dussintals medlemmar involverade i dessa besök i olika roller.



疫情导致“新纪元1”项目暂停后,“新纪元2”项目于2024年重启,作为中国艺术家访问西约塔兰省的又一系列项目。在2024年6月至9月的项目期间,六位中国版画艺术家以不同的驻留形式和时长,拜访了瑞典西部的版画艺术家,与我们在我们的工作室合作,并进行了公开展览。世界文化博物馆、3个版画工作室和2个展览空间参与了该项目,数十名成员以各种身份参与了这些访问项目。



After the Pandemic stopped Next Century 1, Next Century 2 resumed in 2024 as another series of artist visits to the Västra Götaland region from China. During the project period June–September 2024, 6 Chinese graphic artists, under various forms of residence and for various lengths of time, visited West Swedish graphic artists, worked together with us in our workshops, and exhibited publicly. The Museum of World Culture, 3 graphic workshops and 2 exhibition spaces have participated in the project, with dozens of members involved in these visits in various roles.

Artists’ information:

Zhang Minjie
(artist, professor at the China Academy of Art, Hangzhou)



Born in Tangshan, Hebei Province in 1959. Received BFA in printmaking from Central Academy of Art in 1990, and is a professor of art and head of the Mural Painting Department at the China Academy of Art, Hangzhou. Professor Zhang served on the committee of China Printmaking Association and Fiber Art Division, China Arts and Crafts Association. He has exhibited widely around the world, including Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea and USA, and has won numerous awards both domestically and internationally.



In 1976, Zhang’s hometown Tangshan was hit by a 8.6 major earthquake, killing thousands, and destroying homes. As a seventeen-year-old young man, Zhang was rescued from the rubbles and survived the quake miraculously. This dramatic experience transformed his life and made him an artist. His works are odes to the powerful life force, a celebration of earth, and poetry of the land.



Zhang Ju (nickname zoojoo, artist, engineer/designer)



Born in Shanghai in 1974, Zhang Ju has taken an unorthodox path in his artistic career. After earning a BFA degree in Chinese ink-painting at Shanghai Normal University, he worked as a user-experience engineer/designer in Alibaba, Hangzhou, one of the most successful dot-com businesses in the world. He discovered printmaking at Peninsula Printmaking Studio, Shanghai, one of the oldest independent studios of its kind, and the only community studio in the country at the time. After that, he went on to earn a master’s degree in printmaking at China Academy of Art at night, while working at his day job full time, becoming one of the first and only on-job graduate students in the school’s history. Today, Zhang Ju continues to work a day job as a UX designer for TikTok and makes art in his free time, sleeping rarely. His works are in the collection of the National Art Museum of China, Shanghai Museum of Art, Zhuqizhan Art Museum, Zhejiang Museum of Art, Lv Xun Memorial Museum, the Shanghai Library, and Hongqiao Contemporary Collection.



Qin Yi “Ian”



Artist and Educator

BFA, Nanjing Tech University, MFA Shanghai University. Currently on faculty at Tianhua Institute, Shanghai Normal University. Shanghai based, Ian splits his time between teaching Interior-design, AI techniques and working as a professional artist. He often works collaboratively with other link-minded artists with book-arts and Artists’ Book Fairs, or with developing his own works that offer insights into his interpretation of the world, through the lens of a well-traveled architect/ artist.



Xu Lingxue



Illustrator, designer and printmaker

Co-founder of Shi Ke Studio printmaking studio in Xi'an, China, and also the manager of a printmaking studio. Graduated from Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts, China, focusing on printmaking art books, children's book creation and children's printmaking education. Works and lives in Xi'an, China.



Shang Changrong



Printmaker, and educator

Shang is the founder of Shi Ke Studio printmaking studio in Xi'an, China. SKS Printmaking Studio is the only independent lithography studio open to the public in China today. He graduated from the Department of Printmaking of Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts in China and taught in many art colleges and universities in China. Works and live in Xi'an, China.



Hammer Chen



Hammer’s passion for printmaking emerged during her studies in Illustration at Camberwell College of Art. In 2017, after returning to China, Sher established the "Wait and Roll Printmaking Studio" in Shanghai, a space dedicated to workshops and artistic collaboration.



From 2022 to 2023, Hammer pursued an MA in Multi-disciplinary Printmaking at UWE Bristol, where she refined her expertise in printmaking. Her work has been featured in numerous exhibitions, including the RA Summer Exhibition, the London Original Print Fair, and the International Original Print Exhibition.



In 2022, she was nominated for the Queen Sonja Print Award, the world’s leading prize for graphic art, celebrating the art of printmaking. In 2023, she received several accolades, including the Creativity Award from the Royal West of England Academy, the State of the Art Prize from Printmaking Today magazine, and the Bainbridge Print Prize at the Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair. Most recently, she was honored with the John Purcell Paper Prize at the Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair 2024. In September 2024, Hammer was invited to an artist residency at KKV Studio in Gothenburg, Sweden, where she also presented a solo exhibition at Grafik i Väst Gallery.
